Sand Hollow UTV Trails
For starters, Sand Hollow connects riders to the entire Sand Mountain open OHV area with roughly 20,000 acres of desert, trails, and towering red rock formations. There's a lot to conquer and certainly enough trails for all skill levels. Generally speaking, most trails that hug the south end of the Sand Hollow Reservoir, while popular, can get technical rather quickly. For more beginner, family-friendly trails we always point renters towards Warner Valley Trail, Warner Valley Dinosaur Tracks, and Long Valley, both of which flow further south from the base camp. There's also the historic Honeymoon Trail just south east of the Reservoir.
Intermediate & Technical Lines: Step up to the ridge of West Rim – hard-pack and slickrock with optional ledges like The Funnel and Wall of Doom (bypassable). Milt’s Mile adds off-camber slickrock and ledges but has easier go-arounds, while the combined Fault Line / West Rim Loop and Wayne's World offers more intermediate level riding. Save hardcore routes such as The Maze, Double Sammy, and The Nasty Half — for the experts; they demand big tires, custom rigs, and expert driving.
Rules & Permits
- Registration: All UTVs need a Utah plate for residents; while visitors (UTVs from other states) need the $30 non-resident decal (good 12 months).
- Education: Every OHV operator must complete Utah’s free online safety course once
- Mandatory Gear: Red/orange whip flag (≥ 6″×12″, ≥ 8 ft high), spark-arrestor muffler, working lights & brakes. Helmets are highly-suggested for all riders and passengers.
- Where to Ride: Stay in Sand Mountain’s OHV zone and the marked tunnel/connector trails; avoid non-motorized beach areas.
- Fees: State-park entry is $15-$20 per resident vehicle. Non-resident entry fee is $30. Camping fees vary by loop; BLM land outside the park is free but primitive.
Camping at Sand Hollow
If you're looking to camp at Sand Hollow, be mindful that you're planning to stay at a State Park. For comfort, choose full-hookup Westside/Lakeview camping loops, the Sandpit (dry sites with a tunnel straight to the dunes) for more rider-centric overnights, or primitive beach sites on the shoreline (propane fires only). All park camping requires reservations and a nightly fee with quiet hours starting at 10 PM.
If everything’s booked, free dispersed BLM sites ring Sand Mountain but heads up – there aren't any amenities so be sure to pack in/out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Planning a trip to Sand Hollow with a UTV? We've done some research.
Can I get my UTV delivered?
Many owners offer delivery to Sand Hollow or the main staging lot – check each listings' "add-ons" to see if delivery, or a trailer to rent, is available.
Do I really need a whip flag?
Yes – orange/red, at least 6″ × 12″, mounted 8 ft high. Rangers ticket flag-less machines.
What are the trail conditions at Sand Hollow State Park?
Mostly soft red dunes – but that’s only half the story. You’ll also hit sandy washes, loose-dirt and gravel single-tracks, plus slickrock slabs studded with real boulders and ledges. After wind, dune tracks may disappear. After rain, sand firms up while slickrock turns slick. Air down, carry a GPS, and give the rocks a couple hours of sunshine to dry before tackling the tougher lines.
When is the best time to ride at Sand Hollow?
Spring & fall for ideal temps; in summer hit dawn/dusk, in winter ride afternoons.
Are showers available?
Yes – pay showers near Sandpit entrance, free for registered campers.
Can I camp on the beach?
Yes! Primitive, fee-based sites allow it (propane fires only, soft sand – so watch for getting stuck).
